The 30th UN Climate Change Conference Opens in Brazil
Tawazon – The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) officially began on Monday November 10, in Brazil and is set to continue for several days. World leaders at the summit urged nations to take faster and stronger actions to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC),highlighted the importance of a fair and orderly transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and called for tripling the production of clean energy worldwide.
The first UN Climate Change Conference (COP1) was held in 1995, and since then, countries have gatherd annually to discuss and decide on global climate policies, including greenhouse gas reductions, clean energy initiatives and support for vulnerable nations.
Although Afghanistan contributes very little to global emissions, it remains among the most climate vulnerable countries in the world. The Taliban had requested the international community and United Nations to allow an Afghan representative to attend the summit, however, Afghanistan was not invited to participate in COP30.
