WFP: Millions in Afghanistan Face Severe Malnutrition Risk
Tawazon – The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that hunger is rising sharply across Afghanistan, with millions of people, especially women and children, now at risk of severe malnutrition as winter approaches.
In a video shared on its official X page, WFP says that families across Afghanistan are facing a relentless crisis: hunger is growing, malnutrition is spiking, drought continues, and the forced return of Afghans from neighboring countries is adding to the country’s humanitarian challenges.
Seung Jee, Programme Policy Officer for WFP in Afghanistan, said that the organization’s teams are delivering life-saving nutritious food to some of the most remote and hard-to-reach areas of the country. These supplies include fortified biscuits, essential food items and emergency nutrition packets that are critical for preventing acute malnutrition among children and women.
According to WFP, the level of need far exceeds current resources, leaving millions still facing extreme food shortages. The agency stressed that urgent international support is required to prevent anther humanitarian crisis during the winter months.
Afghanistan’s worsening economic situation, loss of livelihoods, rising food prices, and the harsh winter season have all intensified food insecurity in many provinces.Mountainous and remote rural areas remain the most vulnerable, with limited access to health services and food supplies.
WFP warned that without additional funding and a stronger global support, millions of Afghan children and women will face severe malnutrition in the coming months.
