EU: Afghan Women Bear the Heaviest Burden of Poverty
Tawazon – The European Union Delegation to Afghanistan says Afghan women and girls often bear the heaviest burden of poverty and lack of basic livelihoods.
In a statement on X on Thursday, marking the Global the World campaign, which focuses on ending violence against women and girls, the EU stressed that many women in Afghanistan struggle to access basic income sources and face growing economic insecurity.The delegation said it supports women-led small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as projects that strengthen women’s economic resilience.
“The EU supports women’s businesses and economic empowerment projects. Economic support is a powerful tool to address women’s vulnerability,” the statement said.
The EU added that improving women’s access to economic opportunities is essential for reducing poverty, strengthening resilience and protectig women from violence and exploitation.
Meanwhile, UN Women, marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities noted that that Afghan women and girls with disabilities face some of the highest levels of social exclusion and hardship in the country.
