Protesters Say Taliban Should Face International Courts, Not European Parliament
Tawazon – A group of Afghan women and human rights activists staged held a protest outside the European Parliament, opposing any official invitation or engagement with the Taliban.
In a resolution issued during the protest, participants said inviting the Taliban to appear to the European Parliament would insult the victims of the group and ignore the suffering of millions of Afghan women.
The protesters said that during the past nearly four years, the Taliban have denied Afghan women and girls of their fundamental rights, includng access to education, employment, freedom of movement and participation in public life.
The protesters stressed that any talks with the Taliban without justice and accountability would only legitimize repression, discrimination and gender apartheid.
They activists also stated that the Taliban are not partners for peace, but are responsible for widespread human rights violations andthe systematic oppression of women in Afghanistan.
The statement called on the European Parliament not to take any steps that could normalize relations with the Taliban or give legitimacy to the group and instead to support the women of Afghanistan.
Participants urged the international community to focus on holding the Taliban accountable and supporting victims of of the group’s policies, rather than giving the group an international platform.
The protesters said that the Taliban belong in international courts, not democratic institutions or human rights platforms.
They also called on th international community not to forget the women of Afghanistan.
