Khawaja Asif: The Taliban Circulated an Incorrect Version of the Doha Agreement
Tawazon – Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that the agreement signed between the Taliban and Pakistan in Doha is a “classified document”, and the version shared by the Taliban on social media is “significantly different” from the original. Speaking to ARY News, Asif emphasized that the Doha Agreement is confidential and that he is not authorized to share its contents.
His remarks came after Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that an agreement had been signed between the Taliban and Pakistan in Doha.According to Mujahid, both sides pledged to maintain peace, mutual respect, good neighborly relations, and a complete ceasefire, agreeing to avoid any hostile actions against each other.
Mujahid also stated that Qatar and Turkey mediated the talks and that joint monitoring and dispute resolution mechanisms would be established to ensure its implementation.
However, Khawaja Asif emphasized that the document published by the Taliban is not the authentic version, calling the circulating text “incorrect and misleading.”
This comes amid rising tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban authorities, especially due to increased cross-border attacks along the Durand Line and the activities of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). While the Doha Agreement could help ease tensions, the uncertainty about its real contents and the different stories from both sides could make it difficult to build trust and implement the deal effectively.
Asif said that the success and stability of the agreement depend on the Taliban keeping their promises. He warned that if any attacks are launched from Afghan soil, the deal would no longer b valid. He added that Pakistan wants respectful relations with Afghanistan, but any reconciliation must be based on the current situation and the shared interests of both countries.
