Trump Offers to Intervene in Afghanistan–Pakistan Conflict
Tawazon – U.S. President Donald Trump said he is ready to intervene to resolve the ongoing conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan, following several days of escalating cross-border clashes.
Speaking to reporters during his trip to the Egypt, Trump said that he is good at solving conflicts.
“This will be my eighth war that I have solved. I hear that there is a war now going on between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I said it will have to wait till I get back,” Mr Trump said, laughing, “because I’m good at solving wars, making peace and it’s an honour to do this.”
Heavy cross border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan started late on Saturday, with both sides trading blame for provoking the violence. Each side claimed to have inflicted heavy casualties on the other, without providing evidence. Pakistan said it had killed more than 200 Afghan Taliban and allied fighters while Afghanistan said it had killed 58 Pakistani troops.
Kabul claimed its forces were only responding to repeated violations of its territory and airspace by the neighbouring country’s military.
Trump is scheduled to travel to Egypt, where he will chair the International Peace Summit on Gaza. The summit is expected to bring together several regional and international leaders.
According to Pakistani media, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir are also expected to attend the summit, raising speculation that discussions on Afghanistan–Pakistan tensions may also take place on the sidelines.
