246 Afghan Detainees Released from Pakistani Prisons and Repatriated
KABUL – A total of 246 Afghan nationals who had been detained in Pakistan were released and repatriated via the Torkham border on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of Afghanistan.
The ministry stated that the individuals were arrested despite holding valid legal documents. Their detention periods reportedly ranged from one to ten days. Upon their return, emergency humanitarian assistance was provided to the returnees.
This development comes amid rising concerns over Pakistan’s recent actions against Afghan refugees. Over the past several months, the number of arrests and deportations of Afghan nationals has significantly increased. Afghan authorities and international observers have expressed alarm, arguing that such practices may violate human rights and international norms, especially when those affected possess legal residency documents.
The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation noted that it is in contact with Pakistani officials to prevent further detentions and to ensure that Afghans with legal documents are not subjected to arrest or deportation.
Since late 2023, Pakistan has adopted a stricter stance toward Afghan refugees, resulting in thousands being detained or forcibly returned. Afghan officials have repeatedly criticized these actions and continue to advocate for diplomatic solutions to protect the rights of their citizens abroad.
