UN: Afghanistan Under Immense Pressure as Millions Return From Pakistan and Iran
Tawazon – Afghanistan is under immense pressure as more than 2.5 million Afghans have been forcibly returned from Pakistan and Iran, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned on Monday, November 10.
In a post on X, WFP said that “many families return with malnourished mothers and children”.
The organization added that, with support from partners such as Greece, WFP teams are providing life-saving assistance at reception and transit centers across Afghanistan, including nutrition services for mothers and children.
According to the United Nations, more than 2.5 million Afghans have returned to the country this year alone. Earlier in the year, most returns were from Iran, but the pace of deportations from Pakistan has sharply increased in recent months.
Humanitarian agencies warn that the mass return has deepened Afghanistan’s crisis at a time when millions already face hunger, poverty and harsh winter conditions.
