Karzai: Afghanistan Will Progress When Everyone Feels a Sense of Ownership in Their Country
Tawazon – Afghanistan’s former president Hamid Karzai said in his Eid al-Adha message that Afghanistan is the shared home of all the people of this ancient land.
In a message released on Wednesday, May 27, Karzai said Afghanistan needs development and progress, but lasting progress can only be achieved when the country is united and educated and when all citizens feel a sense of ownership in their homeland.
He said Afghanistan also needs a young, capable generation equipped with knowledge, skill and wisdom to help build the country’s future.
“To achieve this goal, I once again express my hope that schools and universities will soon reopen for girls and that women and educated professionals will be given opportunities to participate in the workforce”, Karzai said.
The former president also warned about the growing threat of water scarcity and urged citizens to avoid excessive and wasteful use of water, which he said is depleting underground water reserves.
Karzai further called for support for flood victims and Afghans returning to the country from abroad.
He has repeatdly urged the reopening of schools and universities for girls and called for lifting restrictions on women’s employment. However the Taliban have so far not responded to such appeals and continue to impose restrictions on women and girls.
