UN: Restrictions on Girls’ Education Threaten Afghanistan’s Future
Tawazon – The United Nations has warned that ongoing restrictions on girls’ education and women’s work in Afghanistan could have serious consequences for the country’s future.
In a statement released on Saturday, May 2, the UN,responding to a recent UNICEF report said these limitations could have a devastating impact on multiple sectors across Afghanistan.
According to the statement, more than 25,000 female teachers and healthcare workers could be lost if the current situation continues.
UNICEF had earlier reported that by 2030, Afghanistan could lose around 20000 female teachers and 5400 female health workers.
The report highlights that the declining presence of women in education and healthcare sectors could significantly affect the quality f education for children and access to essential health services.
The United Nations also stressed that, beyond social consequences, these restrictions are causiing considerable economic losses for the country.
The warning highlights that continued restrictions on women not only affect their individual lives but also pose a serious threat to Afghanistan’s educational, healthcare and economic future.
