Fanoos Azadi Movemnet: The Fight for Afghan Women’s Rights Will Continue
Tawazon – The Light of Freedom Movemnet (Fanoos Azadi), the Afghan Women’s movement based in Quetta, Pakistan, held a symbolic protest on Sunday, November 23, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
During the event, participants stood behind symbolic bars, covered their mouths, and wrote the word “STOP” on their hands to send a clear message to the world: “Afghan women’s rights are imprisoned. Stop the violence.”
Organizers said the demonstration reflects the harsh reality women face inside Afghanistan, where bans on education and work, systematic abuse, harassment, torture and structurl discrimination have become part of daily life.
In a statement, the movement described the current situation of Afghan women as “gender apartheid” and a “crime against humanity,” and urged the international community not to remain silent.
The group called on international organizations, governments and human rights organizations to take immediate action, provide meaningful support, and impose targeted pressure on the Taliban to end violence and discrimination against Afghan women.
The statement concluded by saying that the Fanoos Azadi movemnet “will remain steadfast in defending the rights and dignity of Afghan women.”
