Nasir Andisha: Exiled Afghan Media Are the Last Window Into Afghanistan’s Realities
Tawazon – Nasir Andisha, Acting Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, said at the International Symposium on Freedom of Expression that the international community must continue supporting Afghan media and free expression and should not allow the Taliban to silence these freedoms. The symposium opened today (Friday, November 21) in Berlin.
Andisha warned that freedom of expression in Afghanistan is not only under attack but faces an uncertain future. He said that Afghan journalists and independent media continue to stand against the Taliban’s restrictive policies and play a key role in documenting and exposing human rights violations.
He emphasized that Afghan journalists are working under extreme danger, yet remain committed to reporting the truth. According to Andisha, the Taliban are “masters of misinformation and propaganda”, and are trying to control public information through their own narrative.
Andisha added that exiled Afghan media outlets play a vital role as the “last window” into Afghanistan’s realities. These outlets continue to monitor Taliban policies and report on events inside the country despite operating from abroad.
He said he is closely following the worsening situation of Afghan journalists living in Pakistan and other countries, and efforts are underway to support them. Andisha urged the international community to act rresponsibly, expedite asylum processes and ensure the safety of at-risk journalists.
He urged global partners to increase support for exiled media and pressure the Taliban to end propaganda efforts and respect freedom of expression.
