WFP: Hunger Threatens Millions in Afghanistan
Tawazon – The World Food Programme (WFP) has raised alarm over a sharp decline in humanitarian funding, warning that millions of people around the world, including in Afghanistan, are at risk of severe hunger in the coming months.
According to WFP, up to 14 million people could face acute hunger by the end of this year if urgent assistance is not provided.
The agency noted that shrinking donor support could severely worsen food insecurity in Afghanistan the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Somalia, and South Sudan, countries already battling conflict, economic collapse, and climate disasters.
“Afhanistan has seen dramatic reductions with assistance reaching less than 10 percent of food insecure people despite soaring malnutrition rates”, WFP said.
WFP reports that 319 million people globally are currently experiencing food insecurity, with 44 million on the brink of famine like conditions. The agency also issued warnings about rising hunger levels in Gaza and Sudan, where ongoing violence has devastated livelihoods and blocked humanitarian access.
October 16 marks World Food Day, observed worldwide to highlight the importance of access to safe and nutritious food for all. This year, the United Nations dedicated the theme to children under the slogan: “No Child Should Go Hungry.”
WFP emphasized that without immediate international action, vulnerable families, especially children, will pay the highest price.
