EU Sends 130 Tons of Aid, €1M Relief to Afghanistan after Deadly Earthquake
Tawazon – The European Union has delivered its first shipment of humanitarian assistance to Kabul, comprising part of 130 tons of relief supplies and €1 million in emergency funding to support earthquake-affected communities in eastern Afghanistan. The first consignment arrived today, September 4, on a special flight. A second shipment is scheduled to land tomorrow onSeptember 5. The aid, fully funded by the EU’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), is being transported on two dedicated aircraft.
The assistance includes tents, emergency shelter kits, clothing, medicines, safe drinking water, and hygiene supplies. According to the EU, the aid aims to provide urgent relief for families who have lost their homes and livelihoods. “With UNICEF’s support, the EU is ensuring that essential supplies reach the most affected communities without delay,” the statement said.
Dr. Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF’s Representative in Afghanistan, emphasized: “Children and families hit by the earthquake are in desperate need. Thanks to the EU’s generous support, UNICEF can deliver life-saving aid and ensure tha vulnerable communities receive immediate help.”
The delivery comes in response to the devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern provinces on August 31, flattening hundreds of homes and affecting thousands. Taliban officials report more than 2,000 deaths and thousands of injuries. The aid will support families in Kunar, Nangarhar, and neighboring provinces with temporary shelter, clean water, medical care and winter protection.
