Afghanistan Faces Serious Threat of Atrocities: GCR2P Report
The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P) has placed Afghanistan at the top of its list of countries where populations face a serious threat of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
In a report released on Friday, March 14, the center assessed countries at risk of such atrocities, identifying 18 nations facing critical situations and a heightened risk of these crimes.
According to the report, Afghan civilians are systematically subjected to human rights violations by the Taliban, while other extremist armed groups continue to target them. The report further highlights that the Taliban’s systematic discrimination against women, targeted attacks on ethnic and religious minorities by both ISIS-Khorasan and the Taliban, widespread violations of international law, impunity for perpetrators, suppression of free media and human rights activists, weak government structures, and the Taliban’s failure to fulfill international commitments have placed Afghanistan at the top of the list of the 18 most at-risk countries.
The report emphasizes that the Taliban must uphold their international obligations and cease human rights violations. It also calls on the international community to increase diplomatic and legal pressure, urges international courts to expedite judicial processes on crimes committed in Afghanistan, and asks neighboring countries to refrain from forcibly deporting Afghan refugees. Furthermore, it stresses that any normalization of relations with the Taliban should be conditional on their adherence to human rights standards.
The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P) is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to implementing the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle. It conducts research and advocacy to prevent genocide, war crimes, and ethnic cleansing worldwide.
