Taliban is a Terrorist Group Supported by Iran, Says U.S. State Department
Tawazon – Despite the Taliban’s efforts to improve relations with Washington, Tommy Bruce, the spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, described the Taliban as one of the terrorist networks that supports by Iran.
He emphasized that the Iranian government acts as the “main sponsor of terrorism” in the region and holds hostile positions toward the United States and its allies.
During a press conference on Monday (March 31), Bruce referred to Iran’s support for various groups in the region, stating: “The Islamic Republic of Iran supports Hezbollah, Hamas, Al-Qaeda, the Houthis, the Taliban, and other terrorist networks.”
The State Department spokesperson reiterated Iran’s support for terrorism and stated that Donald Trump would not allow the Iranian regime to obtain nuclear weapons.
This is the first time the United States has publicly placed the Taliban on the list of Iranian-backed proxy groups in the region.
The economic and political ties between Iran and the Taliban have significantly increased.
Recently, Iran’s Foreign Minister traveled to Kabul. Following his meetings with Taliban officials, Abbas Araghchi announced that “a new chapter in relations with the Taliban in Afghanistan has begun.”
It appears that Washington is dissatisfied with the growing economic and political ties between Iran and the Taliban and likely believes that Tehran intends to use the Taliban as a proxy force.
