Iran to Open Consulates in Farah and Birjand for the Taliban
The Governor of South Khorasan, Mohammad Reza Hashemi, has announced that Iran will open a consulate in Afghanistan’s Farah province and another consulate for the Taliban in the city of Birjand.
Iranian media reported on Tuesday (March 31) that the establishment of these consulates aims to enhance and facilitate trade and economic relations. According to the IRNA news agency, this decision follows directives from the Iranian president as part of efforts to delegate border authorities and strengthen economic ties with neighboring countries.
Hashemi stated that South Khorasan shares the longest border with Afghanistan and, with four border markets, has significant potential for expanding trade exchanges with the country.
He further added that Around 95% of the province’s exports go to Afghanistan, making this border an important economic asset.
Referring to expanded engagement with the Taliban, Hashemi mentioned that plans are in place to reactivate the Yazdan, Mil 73, and Dookohane border markets by 2025.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Iran has maintained cooperation and engagement with the group.
This development comes as the U.S. State Department recently described the Taliban as a terrorist network benefiting from Iran’s support.
