Fire Incidents and Unrest Reported During Chaharshanbe Suri Celebrations in Iran

Tehran: Iran’s traditional Chaharshanbe Suri festival was marked by a series of fire-related incidents and public unrest this year. According to official reports, at least 21 people lost their lives, and over 6,400 others sustained injuries in over past four weeks fireworks-related accidents leading up to the festival.

On the evening of the celebration itself, another 15 fatalities and more than 1,700 injuries were reported, with Tehran, West Azarbaijan, and East Azarbaijan provinces most affected.

Chaharshanbe Suri, observed on the last Tuesday night before Nowruz, is a cultural tradition involving bonfire-jumping, symbolizing cleansing and renewal. While this practice has deep cultural roots, recent years have seen a rise in unsafe fireworks usage, leading to accidents and injuries.

In addition to these incidents, reports indicate that some cities, including Tehran, Karaj, Mashhad, Isfahan, Ahvaz, and Tabriz, witnessed gatherings where demonstrators voiced political discontent. Protesters reportedly chanted slogans and burned images of prominent figures.

Authorities have urged stricter safety measures and public awareness campaigns to minimize risks in future celebrations. Despite these concerns, Chaharshanbe Suri remains a significant cultural event, symbolizing hope and renewal as Iranians prepare to welcome the Persian New Year.
