Taliban Move to Dismiss Professor Mohammad Ismail Yun from Kabul University
Kabul, Tawazon– The Academic Council of Kabul University has decided to dismiss Professor Mohammad Ismail Yun, a prominent faculty member of the university’s Faculty of Languages and Literature. The decision was made unanimously during the council’s regular meeting held on Wednesday, March 19. However, the dismissal awaits final approval from the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education.
According to a reliable source within Kabul University, who spoke to Tawazon on condition of anonymity, the Academic Council’s decision followed recommendations from the Ministry of Higher Education. The source revealed that the official reason cited for Professor Yoon’s removal is his frequent absences, though the decision is widely perceived to reflect the Taliban’s dissatisfaction with him.
The source stated that Professor Yun has long been under scrutiny, and this dismissal is being formalized on the basis of non-attendance, noting that the ministry’s approval is required for the decision to take effect.
Professor Mohammad Ismail Yun has served at Kabul University’s Pashto Department for several decades. Besides his academic role, he has been an influential figure in Afghanistan’s social, political, and cultural landscape. His speeches and public engagements have often sparked significant reactions, both positive and negative, from various segments of society.
This development follows earlier moves by the Taliban to exert pressure on Professor Yun. Notably, the Taliban previously reclaimed the building and land of Zhwandun Television, a media outlet linked to him.
As of now, neither Professor Yun nor officials from the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education have issued any public statements regarding the Academic Council’s decision.
