Taliban mark International Museum Day, claims halting antiquities smuggling
On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture commemorated International Museum Day.
Acting Minister Khairullah Khairkhwa announced the successful prevention of the smuggling of 1,500 antiquities since the Taliban regained power.
He revealed that in addition to the discovery of 5,000 ancient artifacts, efforts have been made to safeguard Afghan heritage, including artifacts from the Aynak copper mine in Logar, which have been relocated to the national museum.
Khairkhwa urged other nations to repatriate any smuggled Afghan antiquities in their possession.
Meanwhile, Saad Al-Din Saeed, deputy minister of Information and Culture of the Taliban, unveiled plans for the construction of a national jihadi museum. He emphasized the importance of preserving historical narratives for future generations.
Despite the challenges posed by civil wars, the National Museum of Afghanistan has maintained a collection of 60,000 ancient artifacts over its century-long history.
While some treasures were lost during periods of conflict, efforts are underway to safeguard and celebrate Afghanistan’s rich cultural heritage.
