Russia, China oppose any plans about US and NATO military bases in Afghanistan
During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to China, discussions centered on bilateral relations and regional affairs, including Afghanistan.
In a joint statement issued by the Kremlin and the Chinese presidential office, both countries underscored their opposition to any plans by the United States and NATO to establish military bases in Afghanistan.
The statement highlighted the detrimental effects of the 20-year occupation by American and NATO forces, attributing economic and social challenges in Afghanistan to their presence.
It emphasized the need for accountability, urging the US and NATO to refrain from pursuing military installations in Afghanistan and instead address the country’s pressing social and economic issues.
These remarks come amid former US President Donald Trump’s election campaign pledge to reclaim the Bagram military base if re-elected, raising concerns about renewed military presence in Afghanistan amidst ongoing peace negotiations with Taliban.
