Washington Post: Humanitarian Aid in Afghanistan Reaches the Taliban Instead of the Needy
The Washington Post, citing the White House press office, has reported that humanitarian aid intended for vulnerable Afghans is being seized by the Taliban and failing to reach those who need it most.
In a Sunday report, this newspaper highlighted the growing frustration among Afghan citizens over the suspension of U.S. humanitarian assistance and its devastating consequences. According to the report, several aid organizations have warned that continued disruption of support could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.
The Post detailed the daily struggles of families who are rationing small amounts of donated food, waiting desperately for aid that never arrives.
Taliban officials, however, deny the allegations. Abdul Latif Nazari, Deputy Minister of Economy under the Taliban government, recently claimed in an interview on state-controlled television that the group merely “oversees” the distribution of UN humanitarian aid.
Meanwhile, economic experts warn that the termination of international humanitarian support, combined with the forced deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan, is exacerbating the poverty nationwide.
The report also points out that following Donald Trump’s return to power in USA and in collaboration with Elon Musk’s DOGE services, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has been dissolved, and thousands of aid contracts worldwide have been canceled.
Furthermore, according to the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), nearly all U.S.funded humanitarian and development projects in Afghanistan, with a total estimated value of $500 million, have now been suspended.
