Russia Announces 2025 Moscow Format Meeting on Afghanistan
Tawazon — As part of ongoing regional efforts to strengthen dialogue and coordination on the situation in Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, has announced that the next Moscow Format meeting on this country is scheduled to take place in September or October of this year.
According to a report published by the state-run TASS news agency on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Kabulov stated that consultations have been held with regional partners and with the Russian ambassador in Kabul to discuss the possible agenda of the upcoming meeting and explore ways to coordinate joint efforts.
He added, “Together with our regional partners, we are holding consultations on the main agenda of the upcoming meeting and exploring options for joint efforts.” Kabulov did not provid further details about the meeting’s agenda.
The Moscow Format talks were launched in 2017 with the aim of fostering regional coordination on the situation in Afghanistan. Since then, six rounds of meeting have been held.
In the most recent round, which took place in Moscow last year, special envoys and senior officials from regional countries including Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan participated.
The upcoming meeting is set to take place amid ongoing regional concerns over rising security threats emanating from Afghanistan territory, particularly the activities of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K). Human rights issues, the role of women, and the formation of an inclusive government are also expected to be on the agenda.
