UNESCO: Conference Aims to Raise Global Awareness and Support for Afghan Women’s Rights
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is hosting a conference in Paris today (Friday, February 7) to draw greater global attention to the situation of Afghan women and girls.
In a statement, UNESCO emphasized that the conference will highlight the ongoing and serious challenges faced by Afghan women and girls under current circumstances.
According to the organization’s official statement, during UNESCO’s 220th Executive Board meeting, a request was made to the Director-General to organize a major event in early 2025, in collaboration with international partners, ensuring the active and meaningful participation of Afghan women and girls.
The statement further states that the conference seeks to raise awareness about the challenges Afghan women face, particularly in accessing education, continuing their studies, and completing educational programs.
Additionally, the conference aims to draw global attention to women’s rights at a time when their freedoms and access to education have been severely restricted.
This event comes amid the Taliban’s systematic exclusion of Afghan women from education, employment, and free movement.
Meanwhile, several Afghan women’s protest movements have marked March 8—International Women’s Solidarity Day—by voicing their opposition to the Taliban’s repressive policies.
These demonstrations, held in restricted environments, saw women reaffirming their unwavering commitment to the fight for freedom, justice, and equality.
Activists have also called for the immediate restoration of women’s rights in Afghanistan and demanded an end to the Taliban’s suppression, including arbitrary arrests, violence, and intimidation against women, journalists, and human rights defenders.
