Japan announces $1.5 Million additional aid to Support Afghanistan’s Healthcare System
Japan has announced a $1.5 million of additional aid package to Afghanistan to boost the country’s healthcare services. The aid, provided through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), focuses on critical medical needs and improving access to healthcare for vulnerable populations in Kandahar, Faryab, and Nangarhar provinces.
This assistance comes as Afghanistan is facing an ongoing economic crisis, limited sources and a fragile healthcare system. According to the UNFPA, the Japanese contribution will support maternal and child health services, enhance emergency medical care, and supply essential medicines to deprived regions. The funds will be aimed towards boosting maternal and child healthcare services, providing essential medical supplies, and providing timely access to emergency healthcare.
According to UNFPA’s report, the “2025 Afghanistan Humanitarian Response and Needs Plan” estimates that more than half of Afghanistan’s population requires humanitarian assistance, including nearly 17 million people in urgent need of health services.
The aid aims to provide nearly 60,00 women and children under the the age of five life-saving medical services and includes material, newborn Child health services and physiological support.
Afghanistan’s healthcare sector has faced severe disruptions since 2021, with a lack of funding, staff shortages, and limited medical supplies threatening the delivery of essential services. The situation has led to a rise in maternal and infant mortality rates. The United Nations has repeatedly called for urgent support to prevent the collapse of essential services, particularly in health and nutrition.
Health experts and Afghan officials have welcomed Japan’s contribution, stating that it provides a critical lifeline for millions of people relying on public health services. The funding will also contribute to strengthening the healthcare infrastructure, ensuring long-term benefits for Afghan communities.
This latest donation highlights Japan’s role as a longstanding supporter of Afghanistan’s development. Over the years, Japan has contributed to various sectors, including education, infrastructure, and disaster relief.
