Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi Meets with UNAMA Chief in Kabul
Kabul – Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with Roza Otunbayeva, the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), to discuss various issues, including UNAMA’s mandate and Afghanistan’s economic challenges.
According to a statement from the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Otunbayeva provided details on her recent speech at the United Nations, the extension of UNAMA’s mission, and other key matters.
The statement further noted that discussions also covered counter-narcotics efforts.
Quoting Otunbayeva, the Taliban claimed that the United Nations is working to strengthen Afghanistan’s private sector and address the country’s ongoing banking challenges.
Muttaqi reportedly told the UNAMA chief that if the Taliban’s perspective is respected, they would be willing to cooperate with the organization on multiple fronts.
While Otunbayeva provided updates on the UN’s ongoing efforts, Muttaqi reiterated that future collaboration would be contingent on the UN acknowledging the Taliban’s position.
Neither the United Nations nor UNAMA’s office in Afghanistan has commented on the meeting or the status of efforts to ease restrictions on the country’s banking system.
Otunbayeva’s visit to Kabul comes shortly after her recent speech at the UN, where she criticized the Taliban’s policies, particularly their restrictive measures against Afghan women.
