UN Security Council to Vote Tomorrow on Extending UNAMA’s Mandate
The United Nations Security Council has announced that it will vote on a draft resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
In a statement released earlier today (March 16), the Security Council said the draft resolution will be put to a vote during tomorrow’s session.
If approved, the resolution will extend UNAMA’s mandate for another year, with no changes to its authority or priorities, according to the Council.
The statement also noted that all 15 permanent and non-permanent members of the Council are expected to support the extension.
Last year, the Security Council adopted a resolution extending UNAMA’s mission until March 17 of this year.
Six days ago, Rosa Otunbayeva, Head of UNAMA, called for the mission’s extension during a session at the Security Council.
