Wakhan Corridor: Taliban Signs Contract for Second Phase of Road Construction
Kabul—The Taliban’s Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development has signed a contract with a private company for the construction of the second phase of the Wakhan Economic Corridor road in Badakhshan province. According to an official statement, the road will extend from Broghil in Wakhan district to Buzhai Gonbad and will be built in a gravel format.
During the signing ceremony, Acting Minister Mohammad Yunus Akhundzada emphasized that previous governments had neglected the Wakhan region. He stated that The first phase of the Wakhan road has reached the zero point at the Chinese border, but construction was halted due to cold weather. It will resume once temperatures rise. The completion of the second phase will enhance transportation and transit facilities for local residents.
According to the ministry, the second phase of the Wakhan Corridor road will span 71 kilometers, with a width of 8 meters, and will be constructed at a cost of 143 million Afghanis by a private company.
Earlier, the Taliban government announced the completion of a 50-kilometer section of the corridor. The Wakhan road project is expected to strengthen Afghanistan’s connectivity with China’s Yarkand region.
