Deadly Earthquake Strikes Eastern Afghanistan: Over 700 Killed in Kunar

Tawazon – A powerful earthquake struck several eastern provinces of Afghanistan late last night, causing widespread destruction and significant loss of life.

According to local sources in Kunar, more than 700 people have been killed and over 1,300 injured in the province alone.

In Nurgal district of Kunar, residents report that around 600 people were killed in the Mazardara valley, which has been 95% destroyed. Heavy casualties were also reported in Dewagal valley of Chawkay district.

Residents told Tawazon that the earthquake caused severe human and material losses in multiple districts, including Nurgal, Chawkay, Shigal, Watapur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara.

The tremors also affected neighboring provinces. In Nangarhar, at least 12 people were killed and 255 injured, with 35 emergency flights transporting the wounded to Jalalabad Regional Hospital. In Laghman, officials confirmed 58 injuries, while at least 3 people were injured in Nuristan.

Authorities warn that the casualty figures in Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Nuristan are not final and may rise as rescue and relief efforts continue.

The earthquake struck at 11:47 p.m. local time with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale. While tremors were felt across several provinces, th strongest impact was in Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman, where dozens of homes were destroyed and over 2,000 people affected.
