Mohsin Naqvi: Counterterrorism Efforts Require Joint Cooperation Between Afghanistan and Pakistan

Tawazon – Mohsin Naqvi, the Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, in an official meeting with Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting Interior Minister of the Taliban, emphasized that without unity between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the fight against terrorism is not possible.

According to Pakistan Today, the official media outlet of Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, the meeting attended by senior officials from both sides, focused on key issues including counterterrorism cooperation, joint border management, anti-narcotics efforts, and regulating the movement of people between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to maintain close and continuous cooperation in order to eliminate terrorist threats in the region.

In his remarks, Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that terrorist organizations, through their destructive actions, continue to endanger the peace and security of the region, and that facing such threats is only possible through honest and wholehearted collaboration between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He further stated that Pakistan seeks to establish a stable, brotherly relationship with Afghanistan, based on mutual interests, and is ready to take practical and effective steps in this regard.

During the meeting, the issue of undocumented Afghan nationals in Pakistan was also discussed. Pakistani officials stressed that while Pakistan remains open to Afghans entering legally, undocumented stay cannot be tolerated.

“Both sides also agreed to elevate diplomatic representation from chargé d’affaires to full ambassadors, a step aimed at rebuilding mutual trust, strengthening political ties, and facilitating dialogue between Kabul and Islamabad”, according to Pakistan Today.

The recent visit of Pakistan’s Interior Minister to Kabul can be seen as a significant step toward normalizing relations and moving beyond the tense dynamics of the past.j
