Hengaw: 40 Afghan Migrants Executed in Iran in the First Half of 2025

Tawazon— In its latest report on the human rights situation in Iran, the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights has expressed deep concern over a sharp rise in the execution of Afghan migrants in the country. According to Hengaw, at least 40 Afghan nationals have been executed in Iran during the first six months of this year.

The Hengaw Organization, which monitors and reports on human rights violations in Iran, published a new report on July 1, 2025, highlighting the deteriorating conditions of detainees, particularly Afghan migrants, in Iranian prisons. Based to the report, a total of 617 prisoners were executed across Iran in the first half of this year, 40 of whom were Afghans.

Hengaw added that individuals sentenced to death in Iran, particularly Afghan nationals, were denied access to even the most basic human rights, including legal representation, fair trial procedures, and visits with family members.
According to Hengaw’s findings, the charges highlighted in the report include political and religious activities, participation in protests, drug trafficking, and allegations of spying for Israel. However, reputable human rights organizations have consistently criticized the Iranian judicial system for its lack of transparency and systemic injustice.

So far, the Taliban government offering no official response to the reported executions of Afghan migrants in Iran.

Meanwhile, a number of international affairs experts believe that some host countries are using Afghan migrants as a political leverage against the Taliban. These experts have urged international institutions, human rights organizations, and the global community to work with host countries to establish a practical and principled mechanism to address the worsening situation of Afghan migrants.
