IOM Pledges Cash and In-Kind Assistance to Returning Afghan Refugees
The Taliban’s Acting Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, met on Tuesday (March 11) with Motia Maskun, Deputy Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Afghanistan, along with her accompanying delegation.
According to a statement posted on the Ministry’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the meeting focused on the situation of Afghan refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). During the discussion, Ms. Maskun shared the UNHCR’s operational plan for the current fiscal year with Mawlawi Abdul Kabir.
Maskun expressed concern over the ongoing forced deportation of Afghan refugees and affirmed that the United Nations is committed to providing both cash and In-Kind assistance to support returnees.
She further stated that the IOM is determined to establish essential facilities in areas near the Durand Line ahead of the anticipated new influx of Afghan refugees from Pakistan and aims to enhance coordination with relevant Taliban authorities.
In response, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir praised Italy’s recent support for Afghan migrants and reiterated that humanitarian aid from the United Nations plays a crucial role in assisting both refugees and internally displaced persons.
This development comes as the deadline approaches for the expulsion of Afghan refugees holding ACC cards in Pakistan, with approximately 15 days remaining.
