Hamid Karzai to Taliban: Let Afghan Girls Learn
Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has once again stressed the crucial importance of education for Afghan girls, urging the Taliban to lift their restrictions and permit girls to return to school.
In a message shared on his official Facebook page today (Sunday, March 16) to mark the arrival of spring, Karzai stated that Three years have passed, and the girls of our country are still waiting for the school bell to ring, deprived of this happiness.
He highlighted that education for both boys and girls is fundamental to Afghanistan’s prosperity and survival, describing the ongoing bans on girls’ education as a significant barrier to the country’s progress.
Karzai further emphasized that Afghan youth must be provided with educational opportunities within the country so they are not compelled to leave, and can instead contribute to Afghanistan’s reconstruction.
His renewed call comes at a time when, since their return to power, the Taliban have progressively imposed restrictions on the education and employment of Afghan girls and women.
Despite strong domestic and international reactions to these policies, and sustained pressure from the global community, the Taliban have yet to reopen schools and universities for girls or allow women to work freely alongside men.
