US Senator: Halting Military Aid to Ukraine Could Have Worse Consequences Than Afghanistan
Following a heated exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, the US has suspended military aid and intelligence-sharing with Ukraine. These crucial measures had been instrumental in supporting Ukrainian forces and sustaining the government amid the ongoing war with Russia.
While talks are underway in Saudi Arabia regarding the resumption of aid, senior US Senator Lindsey Graham has warned that cutting military support to Ukraine could have catastrophic consequences. He urged the US government to restore military assistance and intelligence-sharing, stating that as long as the war continues, if we cut off our military support to Ukraine, the outcome will be worse than Afghanistan. I do not believe President Trump would take such a step.
Graham also announced that new sanctions would be imposed on Russia’s banking and energy sectors next week to pressure Moscow into agreeing to a ceasefire and peace negotiations. He stated that he will introduce legislation next week imposing additional sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors. If Russia refuses to agree to a ceasefire and peace talks, we must escalate economic pressure.
Meanwhile, US President Trump, when asked on Saturday about the suspension of intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, responded that the decision was aimed at pushing Ukraine toward a peace settlement: “We want to do everything possible to ensure Ukraine takes peace seriously.”
Previously, Graham had also called on the Ukrainian president to step down.
The situation draws parallels to Afghanistan, where the withdrawal of US forces and the cessation of military aid and intelligence support led to the collapse of the Afghan Republic and the Taliban’s return to power.
