Iran’s first deputy assumes presidential duties

In the wake of President Ibrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash, Mohammad Mokhber, his first deputy, has been appointed to lead Iran’s executive affairs.

Hadi Tahan Nazif, spokesperson for Iran’s Guardian Council, announced on Monday, May 20, that as of the previous day, Mokhber had assumed official responsibilities.

Nazif clarified, “Since the incident occurred yesterday, the necessary instructions have been communicated to the first vice president, who will now oversee affairs.” This transition began immediately after the incident.

Emphasizing the importance of preparing for the upcoming election process, which could extend up to 50 days, Nazif highlighted the need for coordination among various institutions.

As per Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution, in the absence of the President, the First Vice President assumes executive responsibility.

The tragic helicopter crash on May 19, in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province claimed the lives of President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Tabriz Friday’s prayers Imam Ayatollah Al-Hashim, and several others.
