Pakistan and Iran Envoys Discuss Afghanistan’s Affairs in Islamabad

Islamabad, January 21, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic engagement, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq Khan, hosted his Iranian counterpart, Hashem Ashjazadeh, in Islamabad to discuss the evolving situation in Afghanistan and regional challenges. The meeting was also attended by Iran’s Ambassador to Islamabad, Reza Amiri Moghadam, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Tehran, Mohammad Mudassir Tipu.

Following the meeting, Mohammad Sadiq Khan shared on social media platform X: “Today, I hosted Hashem Ashjazadeh, the Special Representative of Iran for Afghanistan and the Director General for South Asia at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.” He added that both sides agreed to jointly address international geopolitical issues and regional challenges faced by their nations.

The envoys highlighted their commitment of both Pakistan and Iran to collaborate on matters concerning Afghanistan, especially the complex humanitarian and security issues affecting the region. Both countries have historically maintained diplomatic relations with Kabul and have been instrumental in regional initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability.

The discussions also touched upon the plight of Afghan refugees. Both countries host millions of displaced Afghans who continue to face significant hardships, including limited access to education, healthcare, and legal protections. Recent reports of harassment and rights violations against Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan have raised serious concerns, highlighting the urgent need for global intervention to ensure the protection of refugees’ rights and to address the root causes of their displacement.

This meeting builds upon previous consultations between Iran and Pakistan on Afghan affairs. However, challenges remain, including balancing national interests while advocating for the rights and welfare of Afghan refugees.
By continuing diplomatic engagements, Pakistan and Iran aim to play a constructive role in addressing the multifaceted challenges emanating from Afghanistan, ensuring a more secure and prosperous future for the region.
