US officials engage in talks with Iranian counterparts in Oman
At least two of the US President Joe Biden’s key officials engaged in indirect discussions with Iranian officials in Oman, aiming to de-escalate regional tensions.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Brett McGurk, President Biden’s senior advisor on Middle East affairs, and Abram Paley, the deputy special representative for Iran affairs, participated in the meeting on Friday, May 17.
However, the identities of the Iranian delegates involved in the negotiations remain undisclosed.
This recent meeting follows the initial round of talks between the United States and Iran, which commenced in Oman in January of this year.
Moreover, media reports from February 2023, revealed conversations between Brett McGurk, Abram Paley, and Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs responsible for nuclear negotiations.
Notably, these discussions transpired just a month after Iran’s retaliatory strike on Israel.
